Gîtes de charme with swimming pool in Southern Ardèche

Welcome at Sophie's in Villeneuve-de-Berg

Isolated in the middle of the woods and shrubland, Le Mas de Fournery and Le Mas de Baraud offer you their "gîtes de caractère" in an exceptionally calm environment, away from any other habitation and any busy street.

To access these two ancient farms built in stone, you follow a sinuous communal road that climbs through woods to reach Fournery (500m altitude) and its immense panorama, then goes downhill to end in a cul-de-sac a few hundred meters further, at the entrance of the domaine of Baraud (40 hectares of woods and shrubland).

Three kilometers away from Fournery is the center of the village: Ecomarché les Mousquetaires, main street with shops, banks, tourist information, cafés, small restaurants, pharmacy, doctors, auto mechanics and petrol stations... Weekly market on Wednesday.

Southern Ardèche

History of Villeneuve de Berg, capital of the Bas-Vivarais

In 1284, the king of France Philippe III the Bold and the abbot of Mazan sign a charter deciding the foundation of a fortified city. Privileges are granted to the future inhabitants. The creation of this royal "bastide" will play a significant role in the inclusion of Vivarais, then "Terre d'Empire", into the Kingdom of France under the reign of Philippe Le Bel. City of magistrates, of which some have beautiful private mansions, it is the fatherland of Olivier de Serres (1539-1619), renowned agronomist author of the "Théâtre d'Agriculture et mesnage des champs" and of Antoine Court (1695-1760), restorer of Protestantism during the XVIIIe century. Headquarters of a seneschalship, Villeneuve de Berg remains the administrative and judicial capital of Bas-Vivarais until 1789.
